In late May the Blue Streak Marching Band started up their spring practices to recruit new members for the 2019-2020 season by showing them marching techniques and letting them try their hand at different instruments to see where they might fit. Upcoming juniors interested in becoming drum major can run for assistant drum major and eventually become head drum major their senior year. The candidates teach the new members as well as the old members the marching techniques and commands. The directors interview the drum major candidates and take the votes by the rest of the band into account and then announce the assistant drum major at the last practice. “It’s the most nerve-wracking experience,” said junior and Head Drum Major Joyce Lin. Old members are watched throughout the practices to determine who will be head of their corresponding section. At the final spring practice, music for the show is given to practice over the summer. They’re expected to have the music ready for band camp in August, at which time the group learns their drill for their formations on the field. After the last practice, section leaders and drum lines and color guards are announced.
