In late October, right in time for Halloween, Blumhouse Productions released the highly anticipated Five Nights at Freddy’s movie based on the horror video game series by the same name.
The movie follows security guard Mike Shmidt, who is his younger sister’s caretaker, as he works the night shift for an abandoned restaurant/attraction: Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. A friendly police officer named Vanessa teams up with Mike when the animatronics featured at the pizzeria come to life, leading the pair to investigate the disappearances of 5 kids in the 1980s from the pizzeria, while connecting it with the case of Mike’s missing younger brother.
This movie has been rumored to be released for years, and now that it has finally been released, FNAF fans have been storming theaters to see the movie.
The games, the first of which was released in 2014 by developer Scott Cawthon, have made millions of impressions worldwide. Popularity skyrocketed with coverage by YouTubers like MatPat and CoryxKenshin, who each had a cameo in the film.
Book series have also been written based on the games, introducing FNAF to new groups of people – just like the movie is doing.
The movie only scored 29% on Rotten Tomatoes by critics – arguably a bad score – but the movie seems to be adored by moviegoers and other fans. As of early November, and less than two weeks after the initial release, FNAF has reportedly grossed over $217 million worldwide, making it a huge hit for Blumhouse Productions.
Overall, Five Nights at Freddy’s seems to be a fan favorite, and many hope there will be a second movie in the works soon.
