Incumbent Governor Wins in Close Election

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (right) and former U.S. President Barack Obama speak at an early voting rally in Weequahic Park in Newark in preparation for the Nov. 2 gubernatorial election. Democratic incumbent Murphy was re-elected in New Jersey’s nail- biter governor’s race, whose results were too close to call for more than 24 hours. This tight race was kicked off with Murphy’s plan to begin early in-person voting from Saturday, Oct. 23, through Sunday, Oct. 31, for convenience of voters’ time and to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in polling compounds. Warren Hills Regional High School’s home region of Warren County remained historically red in the election. According to National Public Radio, Warren County has a registered voting population of nearly 105,900, and opponent Jack Ciattarelli won the county with the help of 64 percent of the Republican population turning out to vote. Murphy, whose campaign slogan was “Stronger. Fairer. Forward,” had served as an ambassador to Germany under Obama’s presidential administration. Murphy is the first Democrat to be re-elected governor since Brendan Byrne in 1977. Ciattarelli conceded the election Nov. 5 and did not request a recount. He has announced plans to run for governor again in four years. (Photo by Destiny Sheppard)
