Got a thing for dark humor and Latin dances? If so, tango on down to the auditorium! Coming to Warren Hills is Drama Club’s rendition of The Addams Family!

This dark comedy will be performed on April 4, 5, and 6. In the backwards world of the Addams Family, sadness is joy and to die would be a sweet dream come true. The Addams have lived this way with their traditions for hundreds of years — that is, up until now.

To their horror, their daughter, Wednesday, is in love with a normal boy from an average family. Her love, for Lucas Beineke, is the most non-Addams thing possible! And even worse, Wednesday has invited the entire Beineke family over for dinner! In this one dramatic night full of tension and relationship issues, the Addams family is met with a challenge they are not accustomed to give in to: adapting to change.

Playing Gomez is senior Cody Jackson, Morticia is played by junior Emma Kaiven, and the part of Wednesday Addams, beloved daughter of Gomez and Morticia Addams, is freshman Julianne Magistrado.

“Gomez has a Spanish accent, and I’ve never really done a role with a full on accent,” said Jackson. “I have played Dr. Einstein, but that was an easy, comedic German accent. I’m going to try to learn a bit of Spanish so I can get the vowels and consonants completely correct so I’m not offending anyone.”

“This role is a little dark,” said Kaiven, “but overall still has a comedic overtone to it. I’m excited to observe and delve into her character because I was not expecting to be casted as her.”

Magistrado said she tried out for Wednesday and Pugsley Addams, but being a freshman, didn’t expect anything more than a role in the ensemble.

“I was so honored to receive a lead role and also shocked. It’s a lot of pressure as a freshman, but I’m very excited for the show in April,” she said. “My favorite part about Wednesday is her personality: dark and serious but she can also be sweet.”

Magistrado isn’t the only one using pressure to her advantage.

“I’m starting to work out more actually,” said Kaiven. “and I think Cody and I are going to take some dance classes together because Gomez and Morticia have one big dance together.”

But what prompted the selection of The Addams Family?

“This musical is modern and also has ten leads allowing for more parts. The Latin theme of the music is also lovely,” said Theater Director Nicole Labrit-Petrewski.

Choral Director Lauren Voight agreed.

“We’ve done many musicals that took place in the past,” she said,  “but we wanted something modern, and The Addams Family fit the bill.”

At the beginning of April, you have a special duty to see The Addams Family at 7pm. And as you’ll find, “…you do what Addams do, or die.”
