New to Broadway is: The Prom
School prom dates are being announced and prom fever is in the air! Got a date? Dress up and take them to Broadway’s new comedic musical, The Prom!
In a small conservative Midwest town of Edgewater in Indiana, a lesbian high school student is not allowed to bring her girlfriend to prom. A handful of has-been theater stars wanting publicity again travel to the town after reading about it to help the girls’ combat the prejudice.
Vanity is the ultimate character trait found in the self-centered unpopular actors. And all the girls want to do is dance together, but all the actors want is renewed fame. Fame which they try to obtain with misguided attempts to help the girls in their situation.
The Promis brings teen homosexual romance to the theatrical stage! Will they go to prom?
The four prominent Broadway actors playing the four Broadway has-beens are: Brooks Ashmanskas (Barry Glickman), Beth Leavel (Dee Dee Allen), Christopher Sieber (Trent Oliver), and Angie Schworer (Angie). Isabelle McCalla is playing Alyssa Greene, the not-out-of-the-closet cheerleader girlfriend of Emma, played by Caitlin Kinnunen in her first Broadway production. Their sympathetic principal, Mr. Hawkins, is played by Michael Potts.
Broadway has produced other musicals with some LGBT themes such: Avenue Q, The Boy From Oz, Cabaret, Falsettos, and Kinky Boots. None of these, however, relate as much to everyday teenagers as this new one does with its prominent theme of prom.
Playbill it’s fun and filled with a plethora of issues and a uniquely chosen cast.
Previews for the show began October 23, but the show officially opens November 15. Buy a ticket and let’s all go toThe Prom!
