Friday, April 4 the Warren Hills auditorium filled up with students and parents to watch ten senior boys perform in Student Council’s annual Mr. Warren Hills pageant.
This year’s candidates were seniors Alex Acevedo, Jack Cabera, Brian Collum, Angel Gomez-Palacios, John Korczukowski, Wyatt Meyer, Charlie Piccione, Tyler Redfield, Brady Witt and Logan Young. Each contestant put on a show of their own in the many different categories along with a group dance that all of the boys participated in, in the beginning of the show.
This year, all of the proceeds went to the charity called “Ava’s Voice” and students were able to raise $2000. The charity raises money for people with Usher syndrome, which is a rare genetic disorder that causes progressive hearing loss and vision loss.
Senior Student Council President Meredith Dufner and Peer Leaders Brynn Nemeth and Kaitlyn Conklin spent hours planning and organizing the event.
“I loved collaborating with the peer class and the candidates to create a night full of fun, dancing and a little bit of chaos. Arranging all of the dance rehearsals and planning out the script was a lot of work, but definitely worth it,” said Dufner.
Each contestant competed in a fashion show, lip sync battle, talent show and Q&A portion. After each category the audience was able to vote on who they thought deserved the win.
In the talent portion of the show, Piccione showed off his singing skills and Collum showed off his musicality by playing the recorder. Redfield chugged a bottle of soda and did a backflip while trying not to burp. Meyer made balloon animals and Witt played the drums in the dark.
Gomez-Palacios impressed everyone with a guitar solo and Acevedo identified Cheeze-It flavors while blindfolded. Cabreratried to not make a sound while getting his legs waxed. Young performed a classic Napoleon Dynamite dance and Korczukowski performed a poem for the audience.
At the end of the evening the audience and judges awarded five awards. Witt was awarded both “Mr. Mic” for his lip syncing and the “Mr. Marvelous” for his talent. Korczukowski earned the title “Mr. Vogue” for his stylish fits and memorable entrance. Young won Mr. Humanitarian,” as he raised the most money for Ava’s Voice leading up to the event. He was able to raise $1117, which was over half of the total raised.
“I was able to reach out to local members of our community and school to be able to raise the money. I reached out to members of Hawk Point. I also asked some of the people that work with my dad. In school I was able to raise $90. My parents also wanted to donate and I am very grateful for every donation,” Logan said.
At the end of the evening, Piccione was crowned “Mr. Warren Hills.” From his entrance in his wrestling singlet when he pinned Coach Fisher to his performance of Dean Martin’s “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head” and ending with his rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” in the lip sync battle, he was a crowd favorite throughout the night.
Penny Giamoni has been the Peer Leadership adviser for 28 years and this year’s Mr. Warren Hills was her last.
“This year was so much fun. The boys worked really well together and the Student Council executive board was awesome, along with the peer leaders. Everyone was really supportive of one another so it made it that much more fun. I am going to miss it next year ,” said Giamoni.
