Imagine a world where vibrant forests breathe life into cities, clean rivers flow freely, and the air is fresh enough to invigorate your spirit. Now, picture that world fading away; polluted, barren and unrecognizable. Environmentalism isn’t just a movement; it’s our lifeline to a healthier planet and a brighter future.
Environmentalism is crucial for safeguarding the preservation of life on Earth for not only plants, animals and other species but for humans as well. Advocating for the sustainability of our ecosystems, reduction of pollution, and mitigation of climate change will benefit the vitality of our planet tenfold.
“Environmentalism directly impacts the future by shaping the quality of life, natural resources, and overall health of the planet that future generations will inherit,” explained Kelsey Connelly, a science teacher at Warren Hills Regional High School. “The choices we make now regarding sustainability, pollution and conservation will determine the world our descendants live in.”
The biggest environmental issues include accelerated climate change, loss of biodiversity, pollution and depletion of natural resources. Notice a trend? These are all anthropogenic or human causes.
“If we do not care for and protect other species, our water, soil, air, etc., what are we left with? Nada, that’s what,” said Warren Hills Spanish Teacher Cesar Mendes, who considers himself an environmentalist. “The survival of future generations on Earth requires that we do something now, before we reach a tipping point where it’s just too late.”
Mendes reminds us that caring for our environment isn’t just an option; it’s a necessity. Without action, we risk losing everything that sustains us.
“Throughout history there have been countless examples of industries (logging, petroleum, fishing, etc.) that have either damaged, polluted, or permanently destroyed whatever area they operated in,” said Mendes. “That’s why it’s so important that the government steps in with legislation to regulate, monitor or even ban business practices that do not respect the environment.”
Our world is littered with industries that have harmed our planet in the name of profit. With the government regulating harmful practices, we can safeguard our natural resources and ensure a sustainable future for all.
As more people put a step forward towards environmentalism, we can hope for greener generations with a flourishing Earth.
