Reading Under the Stars, an annual evening program that brings younger students in the area together with Warren Hills Regional High School students, took place Nov, 6. The club Streak Nation organized it, and it was held on the turf at the high school’s sports stadium.
It had a big turnout of around 60 high school student volunteers, and Warren Hills students from all different clubs came to help. Clubs weren’t the only extracurriculars involved. Multiple sports teams and the marching band participated as well.
Although there were quite a few high school students prepared to read to youngsters while relaxing on the turf, not many children showed up.
“I think we had a large turnout in terms of our student body, but not many kids seemed to be at the event when compared to [high school] students.” junior Paige Volckmann said.
Part of the reason that not a lot of kids came could be partially to blame on the weather. Late on that November night, the temperature was below 45 degrees outside.
“One of the biggest challenges is getting little Blue Streaks to attend,” said English Teacher Heather Wight, who organized the event. “It is hard to find a date and time that can fit everyone’s needs. We promote this event through the elementary schools, youth teams and through the use of social media, so the word does get out there. I know there are a lot of practices around 5:30 and other family obligations that are tied to the week, so the attendance can be affected by that.”
Regardless of how many children came, the students did not fail to make it a fun, lively environment. One group of athletes played games, such as duck, duck, goose, with the kids.
The Key Club set up in the snack stand and made hot chocolate to give out at the event.
From the positive student turnout for this event, apparently the Warren Hills student body enjoys Reading Under the Stars.
“I would like to see this event happen again, but we may change it up a bit next year,” Wight said.
