Members of the Warren Hills Horizons Club write creatively during the Young Writers Conference at the Warren Hills District Office Dec. 18. This year’s Young Writers Conference focused on poetry, with guest speaker B.J. Ward, an award-winning poet, teaching the students about poetry. The students learned about writing poems and the importance of word choice. Ward played creativity games with the students and walked them through writing certain styles of poetry. “It was great to have B.J. Ward, who is a Warren Hills and Horizons Young Writers Conference Alumnus himself, be our facilitator at this year’s conference,” said Warren Hills High School Librarian Margaret Devine. “It was a gift for our students to be able to experience B.J.’s rich writing, and more importantly, his process of creating poetry, which relies on the economy of language and a well-tuned ear.” The Horizons Club plans to publish an anthology of submitted student poems from this year’s conference.
