Warren Hills’ Glamour Gals members visit the elderly at Warren Haven the first Saturday of each month to form relationships through beauty makeovers to the women living there.

With over 100 active chapters in 16 states, the Glamour Gals Club first came to Warren Hills when Fashion Merchandising and Microsoft Office Specialist teacher Julia Henning spread her interest in starting a chapter with her Fashion Merchandising classes.

“The Glamour Gals chapter at Warren Hills was started after I read about this unique national service organization whose aim was to bridge the gap in generations by offering companionship and manicures to isolated elderly people, by choosing a nursing home to visit on a monthly basis,” said Henning.

After Henning encouraged her class to research the club, one student –Elizabeth Donnelly, now a junior and the president of Glamour Gals — contacted Henning during the summer of 2016 and expressed interest in starting a chapter with a few other girls.

“Over the summer I researched the organization and thought it would be nice to bring it here and make a difference in the community together,” said   Donnelly.

After going through the process to start a local chapter, Warren Hills Glamour Gals made their first nursing home visit to Warren Haven Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, in November 2016.

Glamour Gals club members report that their visits are equally rewarding to both volunteers and the elderly participants.

“Seeing them light up talking about their teenage-younger adult years just puts me in a good mood and from what I can tell it does the same for everyone around me,” said junior Nicolette Hourihan, a volunteer. “I love seeing these women so happy and seeing them causes me to be happy and I just love visiting them. I can’t wait to go back!”

“The best part of being part of Glamour Gals is being able to be rewarded through smiles and stories of these wonderful ladies,” said junior,Jeanne Riano, treasurer. “Their positive energy and enthusiasm during every visit makes me so excited to see them the following visits. Their stories from their former lives are so inspiring and truly interesting to hear. Not only have we repeatedly made the Saturdays of the residents at Warren Haven, but I can see the sparkle in the eyes of the girls that have been there since the beginning.”
