Ice, Ice Maybe?

In consequence to the political views of the reigning Republican party and President Trump and recent natural disasters, the existence of climate change is being discussed more than ever before. The reality is, evidence of climate change and its presence is very prominent.

Although the solutions are already identified, President Trump has left the United States out of the Paris Climate Accord.

Words of disapproval over Trump’s decision were expressed by former Vice President Al Gore and many others.

Al Gore called Trump’s decision “reckless and indefensible” while Jeff Immelt, chair and CEO of General Electric, called for his industry to lead the United States’ path for improvement since the President wouldn’t be.

Because the United States contributes the second most amount of carbon emissions and has resources to help, Trump should be encouraging and acting as a leader in the Paris Climate Agreement.

Some skeptics now fear that without the United States as a leader, other countries will resist to cooperate as well.

This theory seemed to be proven wrong after Syria signed the agreement, leaving the United States as the only country to not participate.

Because of satellites and other technology, scientists are able to see the impact the release of greenhouse gases and human activity have globally.

As reported by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a group of scientific experts from various countries united by the United Nations, “Scientific evidence for warming of the climate system is unequivocal.”

According to the National Research Council, the current warming is happening at a rate approximately ten times quicker than ice-age-recovery warming. Since the late 19th century, the average surface temperature of earth has risen about two degrees Fahrenheit and ocean temperatures also continue to rise, absorbing the majority of the increasing heat.

As glaciers and ice caps melt, the sea level is rising. In the last century, it has risen about eight inches.

Recently, an outbreak of super storms and historic disasters have occurred. Hurricane Maria and Irma remains impactful as most of the population of the U.S. Virgin Islands are still living without power. It is questioned whether or not the islands will ever fully recover.

Recovery of natural resources and environmental stability is also questioned.

Trump’s lacking support of the decrease of climate change will only weaken the United States’ efforts and create a new image for the country once withholding an idealized “American Dream.”
